Roonstraße 50, 50674 Cologne, Germany (Postcode: 50674 Köln)
The Roonstrasse Synagogue stands as the sole surviving and active synagogue in Cologne, representing over 1,700 years of Jewish presence in the city. Built between 1895 and 1899 in the neo-Romanesque architectural style, this magnificent building originally accommodated 1,400 worshippers and was inaugurated on 22 March 1899. During the horrific events of Kristallnacht on 9 November 1938, the synagogue was set on fire, though brave members of the Catholic community managed to rescue the precious Torah from certain destruction. After decades of absence, the Jewish community courageously rebuilt and reopened the synagogue in 1959, transforming it into a vibrant centre of Jewish religious, cultural, and social life. Today, the building serves far more than a place of worship. It encompasses a community centre, kosher restaurant, museum documenting Jewish history in Cologne, library, youth centre, and ceremonial hall. The striking exterior features elegant turrets, decorative arches, and a prominent circular stained glass window. The interior underwent complete redesign during reconstruction but maintains its spiritual significance. Visitors are welcomed to experience this remarkable institution that exemplifies Jewish perseverance, community resilience, and the importance of interfaith understanding in modern Europe.
