The Cologne Central Mosque stands as one of Europe’s most striking religious buildings, representing a landmark achievement in contemporary Islamic architecture. Opened to the public in June 2017 and officially inaugurated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on September 29, 2018, this magnificent structure took over a decade to complete at a cost of approximately 30 million euros. Designed by architects Gottfried and Paul Böhm, the mosque accommodates 1,200 worshippers and covers more than 8,000 square metres of space. The transparent dome at 36.5 metres high and two delicate 55-metre minarets dominate the Cologne skyline. Beyond its role as a house of worship, the mosque serves as a cultural and community centre featuring shops, restaurants, libraries, and conference halls. Visitors from all faiths are warmly welcomed to explore the peaceful interior adorned with blue carpets and intricate gold calligraphy, experiencing both architectural brilliance and spiritual tranquility.
