Domkloster 4, 50667 Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Cologne Cathedral stands as Germany’s most visited landmark and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that took over 632 years to complete. This UNESCO World Heritage Site welcomes approximately six million visitors annually, making it one of Europe’s most magnificent religious structures. The cathedral began construction in 1248 to house the sacred relics of the Three Wise Men, which arrived from Milan in 1164. After construction halted in 1473 due to funding challenges, the cathedral remained unfinished for nearly 400 years before resuming in 1842 under King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. The twin spires, reaching 157 metres into the sky, were finally completed in 1880, making it the tallest structure in the world at that time. The cathedral miraculously survived World War II despite 14 direct bomb hits, standing tall amidst the devastated city as a symbol of faith and resilience. Today, visitors can admire stunning stained glass windows, the golden Shrine of the Three Kings, and breathtaking views from the tower.
